Summer preparations begin at Tata zoo

Jamshedpur : With the soaring mercury, animals at the Tata Steel zoological park too, are feeling the heat. Animals have started spending more time under tree shades during the day. Big cats and bears are keep close to the pool. The zoo authorities have drawn up an action plan to provide relief to the animals in the ensuing summer month.

Some of the relief plans include providing desert coolers in large mammal enclosures of lion, tiger, bear, mandrill and hyena, providing bamboo mats for shade in birds enclosures and kraal of large cats desert cooler in butterfly enclosure, providing more succulent food to the animals such as watermelons, cucumber etc and giving sufficient water supply to the animal enclosures round the clock. Apart from this mineral supplements and medications are also to be given to ward of dehydration.

For visitors there will be cold drinking water on the zoo premises. First aid for dehydration and sun stroke victims will be available at the zoo hospital. The zoo food courts have also started stocking a variety of cold beverages for prospective customers.

Sanjay Kumar Mahato, zoo curator and Dr. Manik Palit, veterinary officer, along with their team members are overseeing the implementation of the summer action plan. All these arrangements are expected to be put in place by the end of March, 2014.
