Subsidised Plants, Seeds to Help Jamshedpur Residents Go Green

Horticulture Department offers up to 100% subsidy to promote rooftop, balcony and kitchen gardening

Jamshedpur: In a major push towards urban greenery and sustainable living, the Horticulture Department has intensified its urban farming initiative, encouraging residents to transform rooftops, balconies, courtyards and office spaces into green gardens. Under the programme, the department is providing fruit saplings, vegetable seeds and ornamental plants at highly subsidised rates to promote home gardening and improve environmental sustainability.

District Horticulture Officer Anima Lakra said the initiative aims to increase green cover in urban areas, encourage the consumption of fresh and nutritious produce, and strengthen people’s connection with nature.

Up to 100% subsidy on plants

As part of the scheme, indoor ornamental plants for offices will be provided with a 100 per cent subsidy, while individuals interested in rooftop and balcony gardening can avail of a 75 per cent subsidy on eligible plants.

The department hopes the initiative will motivate more residents to develop gardens even in limited urban spaces.

Wide range of fruit and vegetable plants available

Beneficiaries can choose from a variety of grafted fruit plants, including mango, guava, lemon, papaya, banana, litchi, pomegranate, sapodilla (chikoo), custard apple and monkey jack (barhar).

The department is also supplying seedlings of seasonal vegetables such as cauliflower, cabbage, capsicum, tomato, carrot, radish, French beans and coriander, along with seeds of okra, brinjal, chilli, potato, spinach, bitter gourd, bottle gourd, cucumber, pointed gourd, ridge gourd and sponge gourd.

Fresh produce and greener surroundings

Officials said urban farming offers multiple benefits beyond food production. Home-grown vegetables and fruits provide fresh, chemical-free produce while helping reduce urban temperatures, improve biodiversity and enhance the city’s green cover.

The initiative is also expected to encourage environmentally responsible lifestyles and contribute to healthier living.

Residents urged to utilise the scheme

Anima Lakra appealed to residents to take advantage of the subsidy programme, stating that modern gardening techniques make it possible to cultivate a wide range of plants even in compact urban spaces.

She added that the Horticulture Department is providing technical guidance, quality planting material and continued support to ensure the success of urban farming across Jamshedpur.
