Jamshedpur, Feb 9: A major road tragedy was narrowly averted on Monday morning near the Linde Company in the Burmamines police station area after a high-speed Innova car slammed into an auto-rickshaw, causing it to overturn into a roadside drain.
The violent impact left the auto badly mangled and triggered panic in the vicinity.
Eyewitnesses said the auto-rickshaw was carrying four passengers on a reserved trip from the railway station to Sakchi when the white Innova, allegedly driven at an excessive speed, rammed into it from the side.
The sudden collision disrupted traffic and drew a crowd within minutes.
Local residents acted swiftly, pulling the auto driver out of the drain and ensuring the safety of the passengers.
A crane was later pressed into service to retrieve the damaged vehicle from the drain.
The auto driver suffered minor injuries, while all passengers escaped without serious harm.
Police reached the spot soon after receiving information and brought the situation under control.
The Innova driver was taken into custody for questioning. Preliminary findings indicate that overspeeding and rash driving led to the accident. Both vehicles have been seized as police continue further investigation.
Alarmed by the frequency of accidents on this stretch of road, local representatives and residents have renewed demands for stricter enforcement of traffic rules and improved safety measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
