Special Olympics Jharkhand athletes felicitated

Jamshedpur: Tata Steel today felicitated the participants of the 15th Special Olympics World Summer Games held in Abu Dhabi from March 14-21, 2019. The Felicitation Ceremony was held at the JRD Tata Sports Complex. Chanakya Chaudhary, Vice President, Corporate Services, Tata Steel was the Chief Guest and Bailey Bodhanwala, Area Director, SOB Jharkhand was the Guest of Honour.

Speaking on the occasion Chanakya Chaudhary said �It is a good opportunity for Tata Steel to be  part of this initiative. All credit to the parents of the participants who have encouraged them. Special Olympics will always be special for all of us�.

The Guest of Honour, Bailey Bodhanwala congratulated the participants and wished that their enthusiasm remains so. �Jamshedpur is the Sports Capital of Jharkhand because of the support provided by Tata Steel. Hence, we are way ahead in excellence in sports also�, he added.

Around 384 Athletes, 71 Coaches and 15 officials and staff participated in the 15th Special Olympics World Summer Games held in Abu Dhabi from March 14-21, 2019 under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE�s Armed Forces.

Indian Contingent – Special Olympics Bharat included 289 athletes 289 (160 male & 129 female), 73 coaches (40 male & 30 female), 5 officials 5 (1 HOD & 4 AHOD) and India athletes participated in 17 disciplines.

Team India won a total of 368 medals including gold 85, silver 154 and bronze 129.

Team Jharkhand was represented by 7 athletes (5 Male & 2 Female) and 2 male coaches.

Neha Kumari won 4 medals in power lifting, Monika Mahto and won a gold and a silver medal in badminton, Rohit Nag won a gold and a bronze medal in badminton. Subham Kumar won one bronze in cycling, N Sai Krishna won a silver medal in athletics. Ashique Ansari, Priyanshu Kumar, Md Sajid and Lakhan Hansda were the other participants.

Team Jharkhand has so far participated in 9 World Summer Games & 5 Winter Games. Jharkhand athletes have won 21 Gold, 20 Silver & 22 Bronze Medals in World Games since 1991. 17 International Coaches with Jharkhand. 34923 athletes registered with SOB Jharkhand.

Earlier during the Ceremony, a PPT presentation highlighting achievements/performance of SOB JHK Team was made by Satbir Singh, Assistant Area Director, SOB. Thereafter Mementos were presented to the participants. Ashish Kumar, Head Sports proposed the Vote of Thanks.

With more than 7,500 athletes from over 192 nations competing, the Special Olympics World Games at Abu Dhabi 2019 was the largest sports and humanitarian event in the world and set the benchmark for the most unified Games in the 50-year history of the Special Olympics movement.

This was India�s 9th participation at the Special Olympics World Summer Games where India participated in 14 out of 24 Olympic-type sports featuring in the World Games and winning an astounding tally of 368 Medals including 85 Gold, 154 Silver and 129 Bronze.

Abu Dhabi is the first place in the Middle East-North Africa Region to host the Special Olympics World Games. The 24 Olympic-type sports were conducted over 7 days.
