Jamshedpur: Several railway stations under the South Eastern Railway, including Tatanagar Railway Station, are set to be illuminated through solar power as part of a major renewable energy initiative. The project is being implemented by the Chakradharpur Railway Division, which plans to install solar plants at stations, railway colonies and offices across the region.

Under the plan, more than 100 stations in the division located in Jharkhand and Odisha will gradually shift to solar energy. The railway aims to generate about 939 megawatts of solar power through installations at various locations, reducing dependence on conventional electricity.

Railway officials said Tatanagar station has already been using solar power for several years. Recently, a 350-kilowatt solar plant was installed at the electric loco shed in Tatanagar and preparations are underway to install an additional 300-kilowatt solar plant on the rooftops of railway colony quarters.

The division is also identifying vacant spaces near station buildings, offices and railway colonies where solar panels can be installed. Surveys have been conducted along the Asanbani–Rourkela railway line to set up solar plants along trackside areas.

Key points of the project:
