Sonari residents on warpath against crematorium at Fagu Baba Shamshan Ghat

Jamshedpur: A large number of people from Sonari put up a demonstration before the office of the deputy commissioner (DC) of East Singhbhum Dr Amitabh Kaushal on Wednesday demanding that no crematorium should be constructed at Fagu Baba Shamshan Ghat.

The protestors said the district administration should do away with the idea to construct the crematorium which has been proposed by the MLA of Jamshedpur West and Congress leader Banna Gupta.

Various political parties and local organizations were present during the protest against the proposed crematorium. They raised slogans against the MLA and alleged that he was acting against the interest of the people despite being a public representative for his personal gains.

Leading the protest, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha general secretary Laltu Mahato said the construction of a crematorium in the area was not in the larger interest of the residents. Setting up the crematorium would lead to air pollution and also threaten the health of a large number of people residing in Sonari, he said.

Members of Joggers Club of Sonari residents were also present during the demonstration. They said they will be largely and adversely affected by the crematorium in case it comes into existence.

We go for jogging and morning walk everyday around Fagu Baba Shamshan Ghat area. The land is proposed to be used for opening a school. This is a densely populated area. If a crematorium comes up at the place, it would lead to serious health problems for the people as hazardous levels of pollution will fill the atmosphere, said an outfit member.

The protestors met the additional deputy commissioner (ADC) Ganesh Kumar and sub divisional officer of Dhalbhum Prem Ranjan and handed over memorandum to them demanding revocation of the proposal.
The protestors said construction of additional furnaces was already underway at the Parvati Ghat and Swarnarekha Ghat. So there is no need for another crematorium in the city, they said.

A procession was taken out by the procession from Jubilee Park. The protestors held aloft placards and banners with slogans against the state government and the MLA.

The protestors included RN Ranasariya, RP Tyagi, Tinu Agrawal, Jaiprakash Singh, Gopal Mahato, Chunnu Bhumij and Sonu Pandey.
