Jamshedpur: Dr. S. K. Behera, Chief Medical Services at Railway hospital, Khasmahal, Jamshedpur met with an accident two months back when he suffered severe head injury with skull bone fracture.
The skull bone was broken into small pieces. Initially life saving surgery was performed by Dr. Rajiv Maharishi (Neurosurgeon) & team of doctors at Brahmananda Narayana Multispeciality Hospital (BNMH). For skull bone fracture cranioplasty was planned after 2 months of initial
Since skull bone was fractured into multiple pieces it was difficult to
get normal contour of the skull. After thorough investigations, Dr. Maharshi presented other options as a substitute for the skull bone. Customized three-dimensional titanium moulds were the best option. The mould is manufactured only at Shajahapur (U.P.). It is a 3D mould made of titanium with hydroxyapatite coat and is porous in property which allows excellent fusion with naive bone.
It comes in exact shape & size of defect bone with normal anatomical contour of skull. Dr. Rajiv Maharshi said, “Cranioplasty with 3D titanium mould was the first case of its kind in Jharkhand & Bihar. We have happy to have helped the patient get back to a normal lifestyle again”.
The patient was discharged after six days and is doing well.
