Jamshedpur, Oct 30: Situation turned volatile in Manbodh Basti and Kumharpara under Sonari police station area after a group of 8-10 hooligans wreaked havoc on the local residents in the wee hours of Wednesday. In a bid to prevent repetition of the incident, a contingent of Quick Response Team (QRT) was deployed in the two slums.

Sources said several people were injured in the late night incident. The incident happened when a group of hooligans went on rampage in the two slums around 11 pm. The culprits were gambling near CP Club in Sonari. Just then, they had an altercation with some local resident.

Irked over this, the culprits spread out in the two slums and barged into houses to attack people. Armed with sharp weapons and lathis, the culprits beat up several people including women and children, eyewitnesses told police.

Terrified by the incident, the victims informed police but failed to get quick help. Later, hundreds of local residents comprising victims and their relatives gheraoed Sonari police station and demanded arresting of those responsible for violence.

Police forces from six city police stations were rushed to Sonari to control the situation in the wee hours. Police arrested one person on the basis of complaint lodged by the victims of violence. An anti-riot vehicle was sent to Sonari to rein in the situation.

Cops said two women, Pratima and Kalavati, were seriously injured in the incident. Eight more persons, injured in the incident, were admitted to MGM Hospital. The accused persons, all residents of Kapali Basti, wanted to attack the youth with whom they had had an altercation during gambling. When they failed to find the youth, they went on a rampage, cops said.

Eyewitnesses told cops members of the notorious Ravidas gang, which was active in Sonari and Kadma, were behind the late night violence. The suspects include Sumit Singh, Abhay Gope, Ramesh Verma, Suraj, Abhishek, Chhotu, Roshan, Lalu and Lalit.
