Jamshedpur, Dec 17: In a major administrative action following the murder of a woman home guard, the Station House Officer (SHO) of Potka Police Station, Manoj Kumar Murmu, has been removed from his post with immediate effect.
The decision was taken by the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), who also ordered a departmental inquiry against him.
The move comes after the killing of woman home guard Jyotika Hembram, a case that sent shockwaves through the district. Sub-Inspector Sunny Toppo has been appointed as the new officer-in-charge of Potka Police Station.

The action followed the circulation of a viral video recorded by Ganesh Manjhi, Jyotika’s alleged partner, before he died by suicide. In the video, Ganesh claimed that he had discovered an alleged illicit relationship between Jyotika and the then SHO, which, according to him, led to severe mental distress and culminated in Jyotika’s murder. After the killing, Ganesh also took his own life.
In the video message, Ganesh further appealed that his family members, especially his brother, should not be harassed after his death. The video spread rapidly on social media, intensifying public outrage and prompting swift action from the police administration.
Manoj Murmu has categorically denied all allegations made in the video, calling them baseless and false. Nevertheless, to ensure an impartial and transparent investigation, the SSP decided to remove him from the post pending inquiry.
Meanwhile, families of both deceased individuals have lodged separate FIRs, demanding a high-level probe into the double death.
The SSP’s prompt action has raised public expectations that a fair investigation will be conducted and the truth will emerge.
