Jamshedpur, July 5: The prime accused in the Congress leader Buddeshwar Mukhi, better known as Shan Babu Mukhi, Santosh Thapa surrendered before the chief judicial magistrate in Seraikela Civil Court on Tuesday.
Santosh Thapa has been accused of providing Rs 1 lakh to Chotu Ram and his colleagues for murdering Shan Babu. An SIT team led by SDPO B Raman was formed soon after the Congress leader’s murder to investigate the matter. The team was regularly conducting raids to arrest absconding Santish Thapa.
The SIT team also visited Kolkata, Patna and Nepal and conducted raids there. On the other hand, with increasing police raids, Santosh Thapa today surrendered in the court. Meanwhile, after receiving secret information about Thapa’s surrender, the district police were ready for his arrest, but he surrendered quietly.
Thapa (35) who is a resident of Dhirajganj in Adityapur was brain behind the Congress activist’s murder and was absconding ever since the murder was committed on June 15.
Officer-in-charge, Adityapur police station Arvind Kumar said that Santosh Thapa has surrendered in the Seraikela court.
“We were conducting raids to nab Thapa ever since Shanbabu murder. We had also prayed the court for issuing `kurki-jabti’ warrant against Thapa while intensifying raids in different cities, including Patna, Gaya and in cities in Uttar Pradesh,” said Kumar.
“As per our probe he has links with several crimes that took place in Jamshedpur too. We will try to know whether a city-based businessman and his brother were behind the murder of Shanbabu. One of the arrested persons in the case, Chhotu Ram, has already divulged that the city-based businessman and his brother were behind the Congress activist’s murder. Once Thapa divulges the same we will arrest the businessman and his brother soon,” said Kumar.
Later, talking to the media, Seraikela SP Inderjeet Mahatha, said the police are very serious about the murder of Shan Babu and SIT team was regularly conducting raids to arrest the prime accused, which resulted in surrender of Santosh Thapa today. Now police will take Thapa on remand and carry the investigation process further.
Shan Babu was shot dead by two assailants on the Adityapur toll bridge under the Adityapur police station area in the adjoining Seraikela-Kharsawan district on Wednesday, June 15, evening.
The murder victim, who was engaged in sale and purchase of land, was on a walk on the toll bridge at about 7.30 p.m. when the two bike-borne assailants had shot him.
A day after the incident, Congress party activists blocked the Tata-Kandra Road, as traffic went haywire for about two hours on the following morning. During the police probe, nine names came forward of which six accused were earlier arrested.
Significantly, Sanbabu (50) was shot at the back of his head. He was rescued by one of his acquaintances, Anadi Acharchya, and rushed to the Tata Main Hospital where he breathed his last after a few minutes.
In this connection, the police have registered a case of murder against nine persons on the FIR lodged by the murder victim’s wife Ritika Mukhi.
All the nine accused, all residents of Adityapur, had fled the town, but the police had succeeded in arresting two of them by 2 a.m. on Thursday. Later, in the afternoon, the police arrested two more accused, making the total number of arrested persons to four.
Those arrested were identified as Pawan Lohar (25), Pintu Lohar (22), Bablu Yadav (24) and Gora (27).
