Jamshedpur, June 28 : In the wake of several incidents of mob attacks on strangersin the last few months, the police have issued a stern warning to people against spreading rumours or taking law into their own hands.

�People who spread false news or rumours will be considered as anti-social elements and will be booked under the relevant law. Those who try to create law and order problems or disturb public peace will be identified and will face serious action,� said Karthik S, SP, SeraikelaKharsawan.

He appealed to local people to not believe rumours and should seek police help to verify information passed on through Whatsapp or social media.

Meanwhile, in the wee hours of Thursday, an incident of thrashing of three thieves by a mob at Noamundi in West Singhbhum district and prompt action by police came to the fore.

Three youths who belonged to tribal community were nabbed while trying to steal goats in Noamundi in the small hours of Thursday.  But as the owner of the house raised alarm the trio fled the spot, but were caught by some other villagers who started thrashing them having tied them in trees.

As the news spread, a police party to rush to the spot who rescued the three thieves from the clutches of the villagers.  The police subsequently arrested the three and also seized the bike and sent them to Chaibasa divisional jail today.

Sub-divisional police officer, Kiriburu, Hiralal Ravi under whose jurisdiction Noamundi falls confirmed about the incident, but claimed that the villagers had not thrashed the three thieves.

The SDPO pointed out the three were injured, but the injuries meted out to them was only due to falling from the running bike.  He said the police took the three accused to a local government hospital and got them treated properly before forwarding them to the jail.

“We are keeping vigil against the mob thrashing of thieves. We have, therefore, decided to reach the spot if any mob thrashing of thieves is reported or we get to know from any sources,” the SDPO said.

Tabrez, who was a resident of Kadamdih in Kharsawan of Seraikela-Kharsawan district,  was thrashed by a mob at Dhatkidih village in Seraikela after he was caught allegedly while attempting theft in a house at the village. Later the residents of Dhatkidih village thrashed him having tied to an electric pole and in the morning, they handed him over to the police.  The police recovered a stolen bike, a money purse and a mobile phone from the possession of Tabrez.

He was sent to the jail on June 18 morning, but in the early morning of June 22, he suddenly fell in the jail, leading the jail administration to rush him to the Sadar Hospital again.  He died there within an hour.
