Seraikela: Jharkhand environmentalist Chami Murmu gets Padma Shri

Jamshedpur, Jan 25: In a momentous announcement ahead of the 75th Republic Day, the Centre revealed its distinguished list of Padma award recipients, featuring Chami Murmu, a tribal environmentalist and women’s empowerment advocate. The Padma Shri recognition acknowledges her extraordinary contributions to both environmental conservation and socio-economic upliftment.

Chami Murmu, a beacon of change from Seraikela-Kharsawan, has left an indelible mark on the landscape, having planted over 30 lakh plants in collaboration with 3000 women. Her journey unfolds as a story of resilience and commitment, steering transformative initiatives that extend beyond the environment into the fabric of society.

Through her leadership, Chami has orchestrated socio-economic progress across 40+ villages, empowering over 30,000 women through the establishment of Self Help Groups (SHGs). At the heart of her transformative efforts is the NGO ‘Sahyogi Mahila,’ through which Chami has pioneered impactful programs. Her initiatives encompass critical areas such as safe motherhood, combatting anemia and malnutrition, and prioritizing the education of adolescent girls.
