SER signs MoU with XLRI Jamshedpur to train railway employees

New training institute at Tatanagar to focus on AI, cybersecurity and modern railway skills

Jamshedpur: In a first-of-its-kind initiative, South Eastern Railway (SER) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with XLRI Jamshedpur to provide specialized and modern training to its employees. The move is aimed at upgrading skills and preparing railway staff for emerging technologies.

The announcement was made by Anil Kumar Mishra, General Manager of South Eastern Railway, during the inauguration of the Multidisciplinary Divisional Training Institute in Tatanagar. Senior officials, including the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) of Chakradharpur division, were present on the occasion.

The newly established training institute has been set up in an old railway school building in Bagbera, which has been renovated and repurposed into a modern learning facility. Under the agreement, XLRI—one of the country’s premier management institutes—will provide advanced training in fields such as Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity, and Data Analytics.

Officials said the initiative is unique within Indian Railways as it focuses on equipping employees with both technical and managerial skills required in today’s rapidly evolving environment. The institute will act as a “one-stop training hub” for staff from various departments, including engineering, mechanical, electrical, and telecommunications.

Special computer-based training modules have been developed, particularly for new recruits. In addition to theoretical learning, the institute will also offer practical training using modern facilities such as computer labs, model bogies, track systems, shunting points, and crossings. This hands-on approach is expected to improve operational efficiency and technical understanding among employees.

Speaking on the occasion, Mishra emphasized that with the increasing adoption of modern technologies in railways, it is essential for employees to remain updated and skilled. He added that such training centres are being planned across all railway divisions in the country under a scheme of the Ministry of Railways, which will help streamline railway operations nationwide.

The GM also shared updates on key infrastructure projects. He said that redevelopment work at Tatanagar Railway Station is progressing at a fast pace and the new station building is expected to be completed within the next two and a half years.

Additionally, he informed that approval has been granted for the construction of a fourth railway line between Kharagpur and Howrah, as well as between Chandil and Gamharia. Work on these projects is expected to begin soon, which will further improve train operations and capacity in the region.
