Jamshedpur, Feb. 1: The police arrested a 57-year-old man for allegedly raping a minor girl at the Sakchi-based government-run MGM Medical College and Hospital on Sunday night.

What is bizarre about the incident is that the minor girl was already a rape victim and was undergoing treatment for internal injuries inflicted by a 16-year-old boy, who had allegedly raped her at Kitadih under the Parsudih police station area on the evening of January 28.

According to reports, the accused, identified as Sambhu Mahto (57), who works as a private security guard at the government medical college hospital, allegedly raped the 13-year-old girl while she was in the wash-room of the hospital’s gynecology ward, which is located on the first floor of the hospital last night.

The officer-in-charge of Sakchi police station Anjani Kumar Tiwary rushed to the hospital to probe incident soon after he was informed of the incident. Peeved over the incident, the family members and relatives of the rape victim created a ruckus at the hospital.

Police arrested Sambhu on Monday from Hume Pipe area under the Sitaramdera police station area where he was seen loitering.

We have taken the accused Sambhu into custody after he was nabbed from the Hume Pipe Area this morning. We have arrested him after the victim identified the accused through his photograph and later when he was produced before her,” superintendent of police (city) Chandan Jha said.

Jha said that they have made the victim to undergo a medical examination for confirmation of rape, but are yet to get the examination report.

“Though the confirmation of the rape by the security guard will be made on the basis of the medical examination report of the victim, we have arrested the accused on the charge of rape,” said Jha. He stated that they are shifting the minor rape victim to Tata Main Hospital for better treatment.

The city SP said that the accused was on night-shift duty and had completed his duty and had returned home in the morning. He said they are probing into whether or not other security guards helped Mahto to cover up the alleged crime.

Sources informed that the guard was talking to the girl in the evening and it was possible that he had forced her into the wash-room to commit the crime later in the night.

However, the hospital superintendent R Y Chowdhury said that the allegation of rape will turn out to be false because round-the-clock security guards, including women guards, keep vigil in the wards and in the hospital premises.
