Searing heat wave in Jamshedpur, normal life suffers

Jamshedpur, April 16: The people of Kolhan division are not going to get any respite from the hot and humid summer at least in the next couple of days, for there is no possibility of a short spell of rain to provide the people some respite from the grueling heat.

A senior weatherman asserted that heat waves would continue in the region and every precaution should be taken in this regard. The searing heat wave in the city has no sign of the mercury coming down from 42 to 43 degrees Celsius. The weather office said the minimum temperature hovered between 40 and 43 degrees Celsius while the humidity count was more than 80 per cent.

Power cuts for long stretches are only adding to the woes of the residents who are having to do with an acute shortage of drinking water as rivers, ponds and wells have gone dry. All though, Jamshedpur

has been experiencing hot summer for the last several years but this time the denizens are realising the heat in the month of June.

Sources informed that there will be no respite from the sizzling condition at least in the next 48 hours. The meteorological department has also warned of a heat wave condition in various parts of the State as there is no possibility of rainfall in the next three days.

Hot surface winds coupled with frequent power breakdowns in regular intervals added to the woes of people already reeling under intense heat. The maximum temperature in the city has been hovering around 40 degrees Celsius for the past one week.

Meanwhile, a curfew-like situation prevails in the city during the day as the denizens stay indoors till the evening due to the sweltering heat. Heat waves and sultry weather scare vehicle riders and

pedestrians, and it resulted in roads wearing a deserted look during the day. Cases of sun stroke are on the rise in the last two weeks as the temperature shoots up.

The steel city for the last ten days is boiling under the rising temperature coupled with heat waves forcing the people to confine to their house and office particularly during the punishing five hours starting as early as 10 in the morning.

  For about a week the industrial town of the state is experiencing an exhaustive atmosphere with temperature hovering at 43 degree Celsius making it difficult for the working professional and others to move on the street after 10 a.m.

According to the district administration there are no reports of any casualty due to sunstroke. The Mahatma Gandhi Memorial College and Hospital (MGMCH) that caters to the majority of the cases of sun stroke in the city and nearby has however claimed of putting in place all requirements in place to address the issue of sun stroke.

 “As I have said earlier we have a well spruced up 12 bed ward equipped with air conditioning for the sun stroke patients besides, we have sufficient doctors and para medical staff to deal with the cases,” said an official.
