Script writing workshop at Karim City College Jamshedpur

Jamshedpur:  The Mass Communication Department of Karim City College organized an insightful workshop on script writing , led by Sajal Kumar, a Mumbai-based screenwriter with a unique background in engineering and an MBA from IIM. Kumar, who has spent the last seven years actively writing scripts for web series and cinema, is known for his notable achievements, including two Filmfare Award nominations for his short films. He is also a scriptwriting instructor at several universities in Mumbai.

This workshop marked Kumar’s first engagement with the students of Karim City College, where he shared his extensive knowledge on the fundamentals of scriptwriting. During the session,  Kumar emphasized the importance of a well-crafted script as the foundation of compelling cinema. “The basis of good cinema is a tight script,” he remarked, adding that “there are thousands of stories around us, but we choose those where some obstacles arise in the hero’s aspiration to achieve something. The story develops from the struggle and method of overcoming those obstacles.”

As part of the workshop, Kumar engaged the students in a practical exercise of writing short stories, followed by guidance on developing these narratives into scripts. He also discussed how the portrayal of stories and characters has evolved over the decades. Highlighting the changes in love stories from the 60s to the present day, he noted, “Scriptwriting needs to evolve with time. Earlier, a hero meant a morally good man, whereas today’s hero is like a common man who possesses both good and bad qualities, making him more relatable.”

The workshop was also attended by the city’s renowned theatre artist Shivlal Sagar, who appreciated the initiative. Dr. Neha Tiwari, Head of the Mass Communication Department, commenced the program by introducing Sajal Kumar and delivering a welcome address. Dr. Rashmi Kumari, a faculty member, extended a floral welcome to the guest, and Tanmay Singh Solanki presented a vote of thanks. The event was efficiently managed by Syed Shahzeb, Kulpreet Bhamra, and Syed Sajid Parvez, who prepared the video documentation of the program.
