Jamshedpur: A group of 65 students from Shyama Parsed Mukherjee School, Pursudih visited at CSIR-National Metallurgical Laboratory Jamshedpur.
The programme has been sponsored by the Jharkhand Chapter of National Academy of Sciences, India and CSIR-HRDG, New Delhi. The participating students of Class X were accompanied by 4 teachers, namely- Sumit Kumar Bhadra (Head Master), Sudhanshu Pramanik, Mrs Anjushree and Mrs Naiyer Sultana. The students were very excited through out the programme and witnessed several memorable moments.
The programme was scheduled for three and half hours, which comprised of Documentary film show on the contributions of CSIR & NML separately in terms of newly developed Products and Processes, their user industries and Social impacts.
The programme also had a visit to NML Museum / Archive and few selective units of the laboratory where they got opportunity to interact with the Research Scholars and Scientists � thereby, also an exposure of modern laboratory and its research environment.
Dr. N.G.Goswami, Chief Scientist and Coordinator of the programme briefed the participants about the significance and impact of Science & Technology on the overall growth and development of our society in particular and India in general.
He stressed on the need for advancement in the areas of basic science. He expressed his deep concern due to the growing depletion of interest among the science student in India for this research field.
Dr. Arvind Sinha, Senior Principal Scientist and Secretary NASI Chapter emphasised on the contribution of NASI for the making science as popular subject among the school students.
Dr.P.N. Mishra, Senior Scientist took the students around the laboratory and also elaborated on the impact of natural resource like minerals, rocks, and its application in the economic prosperity and development of country. The students asked numbers of questions, and the Lab scientists clarified their doubts and motivated them to take science as their career plan.
“I came to know about many new aspects of science and technology which I barely knew earlier”, said Ms. Renuka Ghosh, a student of Std. X after the laboratory visit.
Many students – Saloni Mardi, Nilima Tudu, Jagarnath Patro and so on were impressed to see the neat and clean environments of the laboratory.In fact, they were thrilled while visiting the labs and looking at the practical set -ups.
Jagmohan Patro said, “I came to know about the contribution of NML in the area of the exploitation of natural resource for the development of country.�
Laxmi Samad, a student of Std. X said, “The visit to the laboratory helped me to know in depth about different ores, minerals metals, rocks, and how they are extracted and used”.
The students were delighted to know about the latest technologies displayed at museum pertaining to extraction of lean grade ore through the column flotation technology.
Students and teachers were impressed to know about the fact that Tata Steel and NML jointly collaborated for development of technology in the area of metal protection and conservation.
The students and teachers were also visited at the Asia�s second largest creep testing lab, recycling lab and minutely observed the scientific activities.
