Jamshedpur, Dec 6: Jamshedpur West MLA Saryu Roy on Saturday wrote to the Deputy Commissioner of East Singhbhum, urging immediate action to restore the deteriorating condition of the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Aambagan Ground in Sakchi.
In his letter, Roy stated that the historic ground has now turned into a hub of illegal car-bus parking and unauthorized garages.
He said that when he visited the site on Saturday to review ongoing beautification work—funded through the MLA Local Area Development Fund on his recommendation—he was shocked to see the extent of illegal encroachments.
Roy pointed out that several nomadic groups have set up makeshift plastic huts inside the ground.
Temporary shops have also been erected, and a Kashmir woollen fair is operating in one corner.
Altogether, he wrote, the ground has become a centre of unauthorized activities.
The MLA mentioned that during his previous term (2014–2019), Jusco had initiated boundary wall construction and beautification work, though it remained incomplete.
At the time, following demands from Bengal Club, Netaji Subhas Parishad and others, the ground was officially named Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Aambagan Maidan.
A small statue of Netaji had been installed with funds from late former MLA Mrigendra Pratap Singh.
Recently, a canopy and boundary work around the statue were taken up again through his recommendation.
Roy said he had also installed a plaque near the statue depicting Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s historic escape route—from his home in Kolkata to Gomoh, onward to Germany, then via submarine to Singapore and finally to Japan, where he formed the Azad Hind Fauj.
He emphasised that the ground is a memorial site linked to India’s freedom struggle and must be preserved respectfully.
He urged the Deputy Commissioner to finalise a comprehensive plan to legally rename, develop, beautify and protect the ground as a memorial to Netaji.
He also sought collaboration from Tata Steel Limited in this endeavour.
