Saraikela, Aug 30: The Saraikela Library had seen glorious days since the princely state days. The library is now under the maintenance of the Saraikela-Kharsawan district administration. There was a time when the library used to be stacked with books, newspapers and magazines and it used to witness a rush of readers. But since the last few years, its state is pitiable to say the least. There is hardly any reading material worth the salt and regulars now, though unwillingly, prefer to spend time elsewhere.
It is not that efforts towards its revival were not made. In 2009, the then Deputy Commissioner Rajesh Sharma in his bid to expand the library introduced many new features which again attracted readers. But the dust of negligence again settled on it and the situation was back to square one. Then again, in 2017, DC Ramesh Gholap drew up a scheme to give a facelift to this Block library by provisioning for competitive and other examination reference books and installing a free Wifi zone and also passed orders for the ambitious project but before the plans could see the light of day, he was transferred.
The pathetic condition of the library is adversely affecting the youth readership. Students who belong to the low income group families cannot avail of books for examinations from other sources as the library shelves wear a vacant look. If this library is revived it would prove to be a milestone especially for the students fraternity.
