Jamshedpur, August 17: Jamshedpur FC’s Durand Cup journey came to an end on Sunday evening as the Men of Steel suffered a 0-2 defeat to Diamond Harbour FC in the quarterfinal at the JRD Tata Sports Complex. Playing without Khalid Jamil on the sidelines, the spirited performance by JFC fell short despite the roaring support of over 12,000 home fans.
Diamond Harbour drew first blood early when Ruakima latched onto a long pass from Joby Justin in the third minute to put the visitors ahead. The setback did not dampen JFC’s resolve as they launched waves of counterattacks, with Jayesh Rane, Rei Tachikawa, and Sanan combining to test the opposition defense. Rane’s curling effort in the first half narrowly missed the target, while Praful and Sreekuttan also went close but failed to convert.
The visitors doubled their lead in the 41st minute with a well-taken free kick, leaving JFC facing an uphill battle. Despite the deficit, the Men of Steel came out stronger in the second half. Pronay Halder’s header missed by inches, while Sanan and Praful were denied by the rival goalkeeper in quick succession. Substitute VP Suhair nearly found Nishu Kumar with a dangerous cross late on, and debutant Manvir Singh linked up with Rane to create another chance.
The most dramatic moment came in stoppage time when Rei Tachikawa’s free kick was headed in by Praful, sending the stands into wild celebration. But joy quickly turned to despair as the assistant referee flagged for offside, ruling out what could have been JFC’s lifeline.
Though eliminated, Jamshedpur FC’s fighting spirit without their former head coach earned appreciation from the fans. The result marked the end of their Durand Cup campaign, but also highlighted the squad’s growing resilience ahead of the upcoming season.
