Safety Excellence: Tata Steel IBMD’s Innovative Approach in West Bokaro

Jamshedpur, Oct 8: Tata Steel’s Industrial By-product Management Division (IBMD) operates as a profit centre, handling a diverse range of by-products and scrap, from raw materials to finished products. It supplies key industrial by-products like coal tar, coal washery products, aluminium, copper, iron oxide, etc. Operating on the ‘Recover, Re-use, and Re-cycle’ (3R) principle, IBMD significantly contributes to Tata Steel’s green journey.

Based in West Bokaro, IBMD is setting new standards for safety and efficiency. It’s more than just a place for moving goods; IBMD actively promotes safety by using new technology and strong facilities to make sure no one gets hurt – neither its workers nor its partners.

A key part of this commitment is a modern Transport Park. This area covers 3.5 hectares (about 8.6 acres) and has a fully paved surface, offering organised and safe parking for around 85 trucks. A very important safety feature is the 100-meter-long Fibre Reinforced Polymer Composites (FRP) foot-over bridge, which lets people safely reach the office without crossing truck paths.

Digital tools are central to IBMD’s safety plan. The Transport Park Management System (TPMS) works with Tata Steel’s Vehicle Tracking System. It gives a ‘smart card’ to every vehicle entering the area. This system carefully records vehicle details, allowing real-time tracking to make operations safer. Also, every truck gets a thorough safety check before it can enter.

To use even more technology, all weighbridges at IBMD are automated and managed from a central control room by trained staff. This “man-less” system reduces how much people have to interact with machines when trucks are being weighed, and announcements are made. This makes things faster and much safer.

A strong network of 74 high-definition cameras helps keep IBMD safe. These cameras are placed all over the campus and send live video to a Central Command Centre. Traffic inside IBMD is carefully controlled with drop gates and traffic lights at all entry and exit points. Importantly, main entry points have drop gates with alcohol sensors, making sure that only sober and responsible drivers are allowed on site.

Beyond just buildings and equipment, IBMD is always improving its work methods. They’ve started using Grabber equipment for handling metal scrap more safely.

Following Tata Steel’s goal of “zero harm,” all drivers working at IBMD must complete thorough safety training. They also get advanced training using a Heavy Motor Vehicle (HMV) simulator. Drivers who pass this training receive a certificate for loading operations, showing IBMD’s dedication to highly skilled and safe employees.

IBMD is also very active in protecting the environment. They have wheel-wash stations to control dust. Trucks use an approved dust seal chemical, which is a green alternative to tarpaulin and helps reduce dust. An automated water sprinkling system, controlled from the central command centre, works around the clock to suppress dust.

For Tata Steel’s IBMD, safety isn’t just a goal; it’s a constant journey of improvement. It shows the company’s strong commitment to always innovating and getting better, ensuring the well-being and security of its employees, partners, and the entire community.
