Jamshedpur, Nov 16: The long-awaited construction of a degree college in Potka has officially begun, marking a historic moment for the region. On Sunday, in the presence of hundreds of villagers, Potka MLA Sanjib Sardar performed the ceremonial groundbreaking at Khariasai, under Hansalbil Panchayat of Potka block in East Singhbhum district.

The project, costing Rs 35 crore, has been approved by the Jharkhand Government’s Higher Technology and Skill Development Department. The Jharkhand State Building Construction Corporation Limited will oversee construction, while Satyam Builders has been awarded the execution contract. The administrative and academic buildings of the college are expected to be completed within 21 months.

Speaking at the event, Sanjib Sardar said that the construction of a degree college in Potka had been a long-standing demand of the local people. “This project is becoming a reality only because of the Hemant government’s progressive and people-centric approach,” he said. The MLA added that he had been advocating for the college since his tenure as a District Council Member, but the proposal did not advance during the previous BJP government. “After becoming MLA, I strongly raised this demand before Chief Minister Hemant Soren, and today this dream is finally taking shape,” he stated.

Sardar emphasized that the college would particularly benefit rural girls, who currently had to travel to Jamshedpur or Ghatsila for higher education. He described the day as “historic for the students of the Potka Assembly constituency.”

Prior to the ceremony, students from Kasturba Gandhi Residential School welcomed the MLA with traditional dances, band performances and vibrant cultural presentations. Teachers Suchitra Kumari, Kamala Munda, Kajal Mani Sardar, Mohan Soren, Joba Soren and Lakhi Hansda were present.

Also present included Village Head Surjeet Sardar, Panchayat Samiti member Rishi Sardar, ward member Somen Sardar, former councilor Chandravati Mahato, chief Gangamani Besra and several others including Sunil Mahato, Bablu Chaudhary, Sudhir Soren, Ganesh Sardar, Arun Sardar, Chhotu Sardar, Devdulal Bhumij, Dilip Soren, Ajay Sardar, Kartik Murmu, Sitaram Hansda, Anand Das, Mirza Soren, Bhagat Baskey, Bhagat Hansda, along with hundreds of villagers.
