Reviving Jharkhand mines could create 10 lakh jobs, boost revenue

Ranchi: Jharkhand’s mining potential remains untapped, with 3804 out of 4541 mines lying closed. Experts highlight that reviving these mines could generate over ₹60,000 crore in annual revenue and provide employment for 10 lakh people.

“Jharkhand is rich in coal, iron, and other minerals, yet its revenue from mining is only ₹10,500 crore annually,” said a senior mining expert. This is in stark contrast to Odisha, where operational mines generate approximately ₹50,000 crore annually, a tenfold increase over the past decade.

Odisha’s success lies in maximizing its mineral resources. “All iron ore mines in Odisha are operational, and related projects have spurred further economic growth,” stated an industry insider. Revenue from mining in Odisha grows by Rs. 7,000-8,000 crore annually, driven by consistent production and industrial projects.

In Jharkhand, however, only 737 mines are operational. West Singhbhum, which holds 79 iron and limestone mines, has only eight active iron ore mines. Jamshedpur, home to three copper mines, sees production from just one. Even uranium mining under Uranium Corporation of India Limited (UCIL) is sluggish, with six mines operating below capacity.

“There’s immense potential in Jharkhand, but many mines remain closed due to policy challenges and regulatory delays,” said a senior government official.

Experts argue that operationalizing these mines could not only increase revenue but also address unemployment. “If we utilize Jharkhand’s vast mineral resources effectively, the state’s economic growth could surpass expectations,” said the official.

The state government is being urged to streamline policies and attract investment in the mining sector. Stakeholders emphasize that reactivating these mines is essential for boosting the economy and creating sustainable livelihoods.

With abundant resources at its disposal, Jharkhand stands at a crossroads, where decisive action could transform its mining landscape and elevate its position as an economic powerhouse.
