Jamshedpur, Feb 3: Indian concept of development is linked to morality and sustainable happiness, unlike European concept of development based on materialistic development. This was observed on Monday by KN Govindacharya, thinker and founder-patron of Rashtriya Swabhiman Andolan.
Addressing a gathering during a seminar titled Vikas Ki Avdharna (concept of development) organized at Tulsi Bhavan, Bistupur, under the aegis of Swarnarekha Kshetra Vikas Trust, Govindacharya said, Modern countries follow the definition of development based on gross domestic product (GDP). As a result, several lakh people were killed in two world wars. Todays modern human society and its current generations are facing unpleasant consequences of our erroneous approach to development. We should not forget that the condition of Indias farmers some 200 years ago was better than their European counterparts.

Govindacharya stressed the need to maintain the ecological balance and return to Nature. He said the race to achieve physical prosperity and success has resulted in barren lands, natural calamities and many disasters of unimaginable proportions.
Govindacharya said problems like unemployment, pollution, hunger and poverty were worsening due to uninhibited exploitation of natural resources. A large population is facing hunger and the number of jobless youths is increasing, he said.
The former BJP ideologue said all Indians need to return to their cultural roots to achieve progress in the real sense of the term.
Also present on the occasion was the Jamshedpur East MLA Saryu Roy. He spoke about growing impact of human activities on environment and various types of pollution affecting the country and the world. He said the Delhi government was spending Rs 4000 crore to clean the air and the government was spending Rs 10,000 crore to clean River Ganga, but the results were still dismal.
Roy said the task of saving the environment was a daunting one, but it could be done through planning and dedication.
Other speakers of the seminar included V Natarajan, Dr Dinesh Mishra, Dineshanand Goswami and Muralidhar Kedia. The dignitaries present on the occasion were KN Srivastava, Ranjit Singh, Ashutosh Rai, Ram Narayan Sharma, Ajay Sinha, Mukul Mishra, Beauty Tiwary, RK Dubey, Aseem Pathak, Pramod Mishra, Neeru Singh, Rakesh Pandey and NK Singh.
