Repair work of Tata-Kandra Road adds to woes of commuters

Jamshedpur: Commuters traveling through Tata-Kandra Road in the night are finding it difficult to travel between seven kms stretch that is undregoing repair work. Darkness prevails from the point of Adityapur toll bridge crossing in Adityapur upto TGS Company in Gamharia.

The Jharkhand Accelerated Road Development Company Ltd (JARDCL), the construction agency which had set up the Tata-Kandra four-lane seven years ago, had started the repairing work in April last year and left the stretch unfinished. The company management had claimed that they would finish the work before the December, but even after one year the repairing work has not reached even its half-way mark yet.

About 1,000 trucks, trailers and other heavy vehicles pass through the four-lane every day.  The car and SUV drivers do not have to face much problem, but the ones who have to ride risking their lives are the two-wheeler riders.

The Tata-Kandra Road linking Adityapur industrial area to Jamshedpur has been set up by Road Construction Department (RCD)’s Seraikela division through the construction agency JARDC in 2012.  As per an agreement between the RCD and JARDCL, the latter has to maintain the road for 15 years and in every five years the top layer of the road has to be relaid.

Despite a one-way road, the Tata-Kandra four-lane has become a mishap-prone road where fatal road mishaps have become a regular affair. According to data available, ever since the Tata-Kandra four-lane came into being two years ago, 200 people have died in the road accidents and more than 200 persons suffered grievous injury in separate road mishaps.

An official of RCD’s Seraikela division also accepted that the ongoing repairing work on Tata-Kandra Road is very slow.

“It is really difficult to commute through the Tata-Kandra Road With the road’s surface turning rough due to the ongoing repairing work, the street-light system is also defunct,” said Pratap Singh, a trader of Adityapur.

Another commuter, who worked in an industrial unit at Gamharia was injured as his bike skidded off the road due to its rough surface.
