Rejuvenated CRM Bara Pond inaugurated in Jamshedpur

Jamshedpur, Aug 27: As part of its commitment to biological diversity, Tata Steel has rejuvenated the CRM Bara Pond at Jamshedpur, which was virtually inaugurated today by T V Narendran, CEO&MD, Tata Steel in the presence of Sudhansu Pathak, Vice President, Steel Manufacturing, Tata Steel, R Ravi Prasad, President, Tata Workers� Union and the employees of Tata Steel. Rituraj Sinha, Chief Corporate Administration, Tata Steel set the context of the programme This was followed by the unveiling of the virtual plaque by T V Narendran.

In his address, T V Narendran said, �The CRM Bara Pond Rejuvenation Project is a perfect example of creating value from waste. It is a beautiful area with flora and fauna with rainwater harvesting facility. As responsible corporate, it is also important to do industrial development in harmony with the community and the ecosystem.  Projects like these reflect our continued commitment towards community, ecosystem and biodiversity.�

Sudhansu Pathak shared his views on this project and said,��The CRM Bara rejuvenated pond is synonymous with sustainability, greenery and biodiversity. The newly built pond will not only aid in rainwater harvesting but will also recharge the ground water table. The lush green ambiance will attract migratory birds and will also act as a breeding ground for local species of birds and insects. This particular initiative is a testimony to the fact that manufacturing units can co-exist in an eco-friendly environment.�

Sharing his thoughts, R Ravi Prasad said, �Tata Steel is committed toward building a sustainable tomorrow and the CRM Bara rejuvenated Pond is an example of this commitment. Plantation of more than 5000 saplings will not only enrich the biodiversity quotient but will also improve the green cover of the area.�

Spread over 14 acres, the CRM Bara Pond rejuvenation project was completed in a record time of one year. Earlier CRM Bara Pond consisted of one large and two small water bodies that were fast vanishing. The large water bodies that had disappeared are now cumulatively a scientifically designed reservoir with a capacity to accumulate 82,000 cubic meters of water. The ground water table in the region has started rising with project implementation, thus controlling the depletion of the ground water table. Planting of more than 5000 saplings has enhanced the green canopy in the area attracting birds and butterflies to the pond and the thriving population of fish has started attracting migratory birds as well. The clean and green environment is not only adding to the beauty of the area but it is also helping in conserving the biodiversity and promoting sustainable development. It is now an area with a beautiful pond surrounded by flora and fauna.

Notably in October 2018, Tata Steel had set-up a Tertiary Treatment Plant at its Bara Sewage Treatment Plant, thereby making Jamshedpur the first city in India to recycle 100% of its waste water.  The Company is committed to its environmental responsibilities and accordingly, the facility will help prevent river pollution from domestic effluents.
