Jamshedpur: Odisha Governor and former Chief Minister, Raghubar Das, expressed deep sorrow over the demise of the great industrialist Ratan Tata. Speaking to the media on Thursday from his residence in Agrico, Jamshedpur, he said that the passing of Padma Shri Ratan Tata is an irreplaceable loss not only for Jamshedpur and the Tata family but for the entire nation. He emphasized that Ratan Tata’s contributions to Indian industry and social welfare will continue to inspire future generations.
Reflecting on Ratan Tata’s leadership, Das said that under his guidance, Tata Sons played a pivotal role in the industrial development of the country for over two decades. Ratan Tata strengthened the foundation of the Tata Group and took it to global heights. Beyond industrial progress, Tata Group, under his leadership, also engaged in numerous social welfare activities benefiting the weaker sections of society, leaving a lasting impact across India. Das remarked that Ratan Tata’s contributions will never be forgotten.
Das shared personal memories, recalling how he started his career as a worker at Tata Steel and eventually became the Chief Minister of Jharkhand. He mentioned an encounter in 2017 during the ‘Momentum Jharkhand’ event when, while conducting roadshows across different states, he met the then-chairman of Tata Sons, the late Cyrus Mistry, in Mumbai. Das expressed his desire to meet Ratan Tata, which was arranged by Mistry. The meeting with Ratan Tata took place at the Tata Board office, and this was a special moment for him.
Das recalled Ratan Tata’s participation in ‘Momentum Jharkhand’ at his request, where Tata praised the state’s natural resources and the hardworking spirit of its people. During this event, Das discussed the lack of cancer hospitals in Jharkhand, requesting Tata’s support in addressing this issue. Ratan Tata graciously accepted the request, and following this, 22 acres of land were transferred to the Tata Group for a symbolic fee of just 1 rupee. On November 10, 2018, Ratan Tata laid the foundation stone for the cancer hospital, which is now fully operational and treating patients.
