Patna, July 10 (IANS) In a setback to BJP ally Lok Janshakti Party (LJP), its nominee Ranjit Singh alias ‘Ranjit Don’ was defeated in biennial elections to the Bihar legislative council on Friday.

Ranjit Singh, whose real name is Kumar Suman Singh, had been arrested by the CBI for his alleged role in leaking question papers of CAT, AIIMS and CBSE medical entrance examinations in 2003.

Janata Dal-United candidate Reena Yadav defeated Ranjit Don by over 500 votes from Nalanda, the home district of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.

After languishing in jail for nearly one-and-a-half years, Ranjit Don unsuccessfully contested the 2004 Lok Sabha polls as an independent from Begusarai. He polled nearly 60,000 votes.

In the 2005 assembly polls, he was the LJP nominee from Hilsa seat. But he was again defeated.

Ranjit Singh was last year interrogated in connection with irregularities in examinations conducted in Madhya Pradesh.

The LJP, a part of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance, was given four of the 24 legislative council seats to contest.
