Ranji Trophy: Kumar Kushagra stars with 234; Jharkhand Tighten Grip on Baroda

Vadodara/Jamshedpur, Nov 9: Jharkhand’s young wicketkeeper-batter Kumar Kushagra produced a magnificent double century to power his team to a commanding first-innings total of 506 runs on the second day of their Ranji Trophy Elite Group A match against Baroda at the Kotambi Stadium.

Winning the toss and opting to bowl first, Baroda’s decision backfired as Jharkhand’s batting line-up, anchored by Kushagra’s brilliant 234 off 367 balls, dominated from start to finish. His innings, laced with 23 boundaries and four sixes, showcased exceptional temperament and shot selection, holding the innings together even as wickets fell around him.

Jharkhand lost early wickets, with openers Sharandeep Singh (9) and Shikhar Mohan (21) dismissed cheaply. However, Kushagra found steady partners in Virat Singh (46) and captain Ishan Kishan (28), before forming a crucial 135-run partnership with Robin Minz, who played an attacking knock of 79 off just 90 balls, striking 10 fours and a six. Later contributions came from Anukul Roy (28) and Sahil Raj (39), helping Jharkhand go past the 500-run mark.

For Baroda, spinners Bhargav Bhatt and Mahesh Pithiya were the pick of the bowlers, taking three wickets each, though both were expensive. Bhatt finished with 3 for 123, while Pithiya bagged 3 for 156. Among the pacers, Rasikh Salam (2/83) and Raj Limbani (2/52) chipped in with crucial breakthroughs.

In reply, Baroda’s innings got off to a disastrous start, losing two wickets for just 10 runs. Opener Jyotsnil Singh fell lbw to Sahil Raj on the very first delivery of the innings, followed soon after by Sukirt Pandey, also trapped in front. Shivalik Sharma (23) showed some resistance before being dismissed by Rishav Raj.

At stumps on Day 2, Baroda reached 78 for 3 in 31 overs, still trailing Jharkhand by 428 runs. Shashwat Rawat (20*) and Vishnu Solanki (28*) were unbeaten at the crease, trying to steady the innings after the early collapse.

Among Jharkhand’s bowlers, Sahil Raj impressed with figures of 2 for 15 in seven overs, while Rishav Raj claimed one wicket for 23 runs.

With Jharkhand firmly in control, Baroda faces an uphill task to avoid the follow-on when play resumes on Day 3. The match so far has belonged entirely to Kumar Kushagra, whose splendid double ton has put Jharkhand in a commanding position.
