Jamshedpur: In a major move to improve passenger convenience, the South Eastern Railway (SER) has decided to install specialized lighting on station name boards. This initiative ensures that passengers—especially those on high-speed trains—can clearly read station names at night, preventing confusion and accidental deboarding.
₹37 Crore Tender for 86 Stations
The South Eastern Zone has issued a tender worth over ₹37 crore to kickstart the project. The lighting upgrade will cover 86 stations across the Chakradharpur Division, including Tatanagar Station.
Currently, station boards at the ends of platforms often lack dedicated lighting. This makes it difficult for commuters to identify their location during night journeys. The new illumination system will solve this “visibility gap,” making travel safer and more predictable.
Learning from Train Board Upgrades
This project follows a successful initiative last year where the Railway Zone updated coach boards. To improve nighttime visibility:
-
Railways replaced old green and red boards with bright yellow boards.
-
Standard white lettering on dark backgrounds gave way to high-contrast colors.
-
Many trains at Tatanagar already feature these reflective, brightly colored nameplates.
Eliminating Travel Anxiety
Railway officials noted that passengers in fast-moving express trains often miss station names in the dark. This frequently leads to travelers getting off at the wrong stop. By illuminating the platform signage, the Railways aims to eliminate this stress and provide a world-class travel experience.
