Locals Demand Livelihood Protection

Jamshedpur: Tensions erupted in Adityapur Industrial Area as the Jharkhand Industrial Area Development Authority (JIADA) launched an encroachment removal campaign on Monday. Youth leaders and locals took to the streets, blocking the path of JIADA’s bulldozers, protesting against the destruction of shops built on small parcels of land.
The protest halted the campaign temporarily, as bulldozers stopped near Sudha Dairy turn and a large group of young protesters, led by Ravindra Baske and Ram Hansda, demanded the administration halt the drive. Several shops, including around half a dozen at the protest site, were demolished before the standoff.
“This campaign is an attack on the livelihood of tribal natives. Many people in this area depend on these small shops to support their families. If JIADA continues to destroy these shops, unemployment will rise and the youth will turn to crime. This cannot be allowed to continue,” said Ravindra Baske, one of the youth leaders at the scene.
The encroachment removal campaign is part of JIADA’s ongoing efforts to clear out illegally occupied areas in the industrial zone. However, locals argue that while the land is being cleared for new industries, there is little effort to revive the hundreds of closed businesses in the industrial area.
Ram Hansda, another prominent youth leader, voiced his concerns: “JIADA is paying no attention to the hundreds of idle factories. Instead, they are targeting people who have been running small businesses for years to make a living.”
In response to the protest, JIADA officials paused the campaign and urged protesters to speak to higher authorities. “We are open to dialogue, but the removal of illegal encroachments is a necessary part of development. We urge the protesters to discuss their grievances with us,” said a senior JIADA officer.
While the dispute continues, the protest has sparked a larger conversation about the balance between industrial development and the livelihoods of local residents
