Jamshedpur, Apr 9: With the rise in temperatures across Jamshedpur, non-company areas such as Mango, Karandih, Parsudih, Govindpur, Bagbera, Jugsalai and Adityapur are experiencing frequent power cuts. Residents in these areas are facing electricity outages for nearly two hours daily, with power being cut off at intervals like 6 AM, 2 PM and 5 PM.
The Kolhan division’s power demand has surged to 600 MW, up from the usual 500 MW, due to increased usage of air conditioners, coolers, fans and refrigerators. While Jharkhand Bijli Vitran Nigam Limited (JBVNL) claims there is no power crisis, officials admit that the existing infrastructure is outdated and vulnerable, particularly with aging overhead high-tension lines posing risks of breakage and accidents during continuous supply.
Currently, Mango receives 70 MW of electricity, while Kunwar Basti and Uliyan are supplied 25 MW from the Baliguma and Gamharia grids. Karandih is receiving 72 MW from the Golmuri grid. Officials state that power is being supplied at full load and all grids—Golmuri (72 MW), Baliguma (65 MW) and Gamharia (25 MW)—are meeting the demand.
However, due to maintenance work and technical issues, localized power outages are occurring. Executive engineers have instructed sub-stations to maintain daily logs detailing the duration and causes of power cuts. Singhbhum region GM Ajit Kumar confirmed that while the current supply matches demand, the increased load due to high temperatures is leading to disruptions. He assured that power cuts are being closely monitored and preparations are underway to handle potential challenges in the coming weeks.
