Political observers gauge mood with higher voter turnout in 12 of 14 Kolhan seats

Turnout drops in Jamshedpur East compared to last assembly election

Jamshedpur, Nov 14: Kolhan saw a notable surge in voter turnout, with 12 out of 14 constituencies reporting higher voting percentages compared to the 2019 elections. This increased participation has spurred discussions and calculations among political parties, as each side attempts to interpret the results in terms of potential gains and losses.

Kharsawan emerged with the highest turnout in Kolhan at 78.71%, while Jamshedpur West recorded the lowest at 56.53%. Interestingly, despite lower turnout in Jamshedpur West, voting increased from 2019. Majhgaon and Jamshedpur East were the only two constituencies where turnout declined since the last assembly election.

Political analysts suggest that this rise in turnout could strengthen the position of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA), helping them solidify their standing in Kolhan. Meanwhile, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) views the increased participation as a sign of growing support in certain constituencies. Despite varied interpretations across the region, experts agree that the impact of the turnout increase—which typically did not exceed five to six percentage points—might be less decisive in influencing final outcomes.

Throughout the polling day, Kolhan’s electorate—from common citizens to high-profile voters—discussed the possible impact of the higher turnout. Conversations centred on which party might benefit from these shifts and how the turnout could be influenced by voter demographics and localized issues. The Seraikela constituency, for example, drew significant attention as voters speculated whether BJP’s Champai Soren or JMM’s Ganesh Mahali could secure a victory. The increased turnout here has led supporters of both candidates to make optimistic predictions based on voter patterns. Champai’s supporters feel that his move to BJP has won him support in Adityapur, an area he previously struggled to capture. Ganesh’s supporters, however, argue that JMM’s strong voter base could be decisive.

In Ghatsila, the contest between Ramdas Soren and Babulal Soren also sparked debate. Observers noted that the increased voter turnout could benefit either candidate. Some believe that Ramdas, despite his traditional voter base, may have drawn additional support from BJP sympathizers dissatisfied with Babulal’s candidacy. Meanwhile, Babulal’s advocates argue that his strong rapport with younger voters could tip the scales in his favor.

In Potka, where turnout also increased, Meera Munda’s supporters say the BJP candidate benefited from anti-incumbency sentiments against Sanjeev Sardar, the sitting MLA. They claim that previously apathetic BJP supporters turned out in greater numbers to vote for her. Conversely, Sanjeev’s supporters argue that he still commands significant support in tribal areas, giving him an advantage.

Ichagarh’s race is shaping up as a triangular contest between JMM’s Sabita Mahato, independent candidate Arvind Singh, and AJSU’s Harelal Mahato. Sabita’s supporters believe the rivalry between Arvind and Harelal will benefit her. However, Arvind’s backers feel that the competition among Mahto voters could work in his favour. Meanwhile, Harelal’s supporters claim there is discontent against the JMM candidate, predicting this will translate into votes for him.

In East Singhbhum, the overall voter turnout reached 67.10%, with Baharagora at 78.20% (up from 75.76% in 2019) and Potka at 73.30% (up from 68.95%). Jamshedpur East saw a slight decline from 57.39% to 56.99%.

In West Singhbhum, the turnout stood at 66.76%. Chaibasa recorded a marginal increase, from 66.49% in 2019 to 68.61%, while Majhgaon saw a decline from 73.20% to 69.00%.

As counting day approaches, parties remain in suspense over whether these turnout trends would ultimately shift the political balance in their favour.
