Rise of ‘accidental leader’ Hemant Soren in political arena
Ranchi, August 10: Notwithstanding their political differences on major issues, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday extended birthday wishes to Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren.
The Prime Minister on Twitter extended his birthday wishes to Hemant Soren on his 46th birthday.
In a tweet the Prime Minister prayed for good health and long life of the Chief Minister.
Chief Minister Hemant Soren also expressed his gratitude towards the Prime Minister for the birthday wishes.
On the other hand Jharkhand Governor Ramesh Bais also extended his best wishes to the Chief Minister on his birthday.
Meanwhile, a long queue of people gathered at the residence of the Chief Minister to extend his birthday wishes. The Chief Minister during the day also interacted with the people who had come from different parts of the state to apprise him of their problems.
After listening to their problems he directed the officials to take necessary action to solve their problems. The Chief Minister assured the people that his government is committed to solve each and every problem of the people and that of the state.
Significantly, Hemant Soren was born on 10 August 1975 in Ramgarh, Jharkhand (then in Bihar). Hemant Soren belongs to a political family. His father Shibu Soren has been the Chief Minister of Jharkhand.
Those who are close to Hemant Soren term him ‘Accidentally Leader’
Hemant Soren is an engineering drop out student, but very few people would know that Hemant Soren has come into politics not on his own will, but by circumstance. Actually, Hemant Soren’s elder brother Durga Soren had died suddenly and father Shibu Soren’s health was not going well. Because of this, Hemant Soren entered politics ‘accidentally’.
Hemant Soren became deputy chief minister of Jharkhand by resigning from Rajya Sabha.
“After entering politics, Hemant Soren was first elected to the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of parliament, in 2009, but resigned as an MP in January 2010 and joined the state’s Arjun Munda-led BJP. Became Deputy CM in the BJP) government,” said a close aide of the chief minister.
The JMM was involved as an ally in this government. But the relations between BJP-JMM did not last long and hence Arjun Munda’s government fell in 2013. After this, the President’s rule was imposed in the state. Although Hemant Soren tried to form the government again in the state through the Congress, but the JMM leader’s efforts could not succeed.
During this, Hemant Soren also faced criticism within the party but he did not become weak but emerged as a strong leader. The result was that in the year 2013, Hemant Soren formed the government in the state with the help of RJD and Congress and he became the Chief Minister of Jharkhand for the first time.
However, he lost power in Modi wave.
After assuming the power of the state for about one and a half years, BJP returned to Jharkhand in the Modi wave in 2014 and Raghubar Das was made the chief minister. During this, Hemant Soren remained the leader of the opposition and continued to confront the BJP government on tribal and youth issues.
During the intervening five years, Hemant Soren not only strengthened his hold within the party, but also made his popularity in the state. The result of this was that in the year 2019, the JMM, Congress and RJD coalition government returned to the state in Jharkhand with a thumping majority and BJP had to be out of power. His shrewd political skills could be seen in winning three by-elections after 2019 assembly polls, retaining Dumka and Madhupur and helping ally Congress to retain Bermo.
