
Jamshedpur: Joining hands with district administration, several organisations have decided to provide pick-drop service for specially-abled voters on voting day on December 7. In order to increase voting percentage, various social organisations are using social media platforms and door to door awareness programmes to educate disabled people and their families to come out and vote.
Social organisations like Jharkhand Viklang Sansthan and Jharkhand Viklang Manch have decided to provide vehicles that would ferry disabled people to their polling vote and would drop them home.
Moreover, senior citizens and People with Disabilities (PwDs) will also be able to exercise their franchise from their homes through postal ballot for the first time during this assembly elections, Voters of these categories who want to cast their votes through the postal ballot will have to fill form-12 D. A special team will be constituted to visit house to house for the election process. A proper video recording of the process will also be done. In East Singhbhum, there are 15162 registered disabled voters.
East Singhbhum deputy commissioner Ravi Shankar Shukla along with organisations also organised a meeting with various organisations. He motivated disabled people to visit polling booths to check if it is accessible for PwDs.
” We want to ensure that even specially-abled participate in voting. The administration is also supporting our initiative. We have been asked to see if all polling booths have easy accessibility for the specially abled. If not we have been asked to report to the district administration who will arrange the basic facilities. Many prefer to stay and home and avoid voting but we will ensure their participation,” said an official of Jharkhand Viklang Sansthan.
The organisation working for the welfare and legal rights of physically disabled people have also decided to provide some vehicles which can ferry disabled people to the polling booth.
Moreover, the social welfare department also organised a live demonstration of EVM machine functioning for the special voters at School of Hope in Northern Town, Jeevika in Sonari and Parents Association of Mentally Handicapped (PAMHJ) in Dhatkidih.
