Patna NEET aspirant death: Autopsy confirms sexual assault, prolonged struggle

Patna (IANS): The post-mortem report in the death of a NEET aspirant in Patna has revealed shocking details, confirming sexual assault, clear signs of resistance, and multiple injuries on the victim’s private parts, sharply contradicting the initial claims of suicide made by the police.

The autopsy, conducted by a medical board at Patna Medical College Hospital, noted that the victim resisted her attackers for nearly one-and-a-half to two hours before her death. All injuries on her body were found to be ante-mortem, indicating a prolonged and violent struggle rather than a sudden medical emergency.

Medical findings recorded deep crescent-shaped nail marks around the neck and shoulders, injuries doctors say typically occur when a victim struggles desperately to break free while being overpowered. Multiple scratch marks across the chest and shoulders further point to sustained assault, while bruises on the back suggest repeated impact against a hard surface over an extended period.

Based on the pattern and severity of injuries, the medical board has not ruled out the involvement of more than one person in the crime.

The most disturbing findings relate to the genital examination, which documented fresh injuries, deep abrasions, tissue trauma, and excessive bleeding. Doctors categorically stated that these injuries are inconsistent with consensual sexual activity and clearly indicate forced penetration. They added that such widespread bodily injuries would not be present in cases of consent.

These conclusions directly contradict the Patna Police’s earlier claims that ruled out sexual assault and suggested suicide due to an alleged overdose of sleeping pills.

The discrepancy has raised serious questions about the initial handling of the case. The victim’s family has alleged that the hostel owner attempted to offer money to settle the matter, and that three suspects were questioned and later released under questionable circumstances. The family also claims that a person known to the victim may be involved, an angle they say was not properly investigated.

The student’s uncle has accused the police and administration of attempting to suppress the case, calling it a clear instance of gang rape and brutal murder. He also alleged that police press conference on January 11 — before the student’s death — prematurely labelled the incident as suicide.

The family has questioned police claims that 90 sleeping pills were recovered from the student’s room, pointing out that such a quantity cannot legally be purchased without a prescription. Serious allegations have also been made against the hostel owner, hospital management, and local police officials.

According to the family, officials from Prabhat Memorial Hospital and the Chitragupta Nagar police station attempted to downplay the case, with allegations that up to Rs 15 lakh was offered to withdraw the complaint.

Having lost faith in the local administration, the family has decided to approach the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) court seeking justice.

With the autopsy report now public, the suicide theory has come under intense scrutiny. Earlier claims by Senior Superintendent of Police Kartikeya Sharma regarding a sleeping pill overdose are being questioned, as is the reliance on alleged suicide-related internet searches found on the victim’s phone.

Amid mounting pressure, Bihar Director General of Police Vinay Kumar has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by an officer of SP rank. The probe will be monitored daily by the Patna Range Inspector General, signalling a high-level review of the case.
