Pathalgari meant to save innocent Adivasis: Joseph Purty

Hundreds of villagers perform Pathalgari ceremony in Kuchai

Seraikela: Hundreds of villagers of six villages in Seraikela-Kharsawan took part in the banned ‘pathalgari’ ceremony (controversial tribal tradition prohibiting outsiders from entering village) under Kuchai police station area on Tuesday, sources said.

Sources said a public meeting was organized in Patayata village after the pathalgari ceremony. A large number of villagers were present on the occasion with traditional weapons. Dr Joseph Purty and several other guests were welcomed at the meeting venue.

Addressing the gathering, Purty claimed that the Indian Constitution had given the Gram Sabha a right to protect its water, forests and land by invoking its powers. He said India was a land of tribal people and only the Adivasis were its true masters. He said the Pathalgari tradition was being used to save the Adivasis, sources said.

Purty alleged that the state government was usurping tribal land without the permission of Gram Sabha. He said Pathalgari tradition had saved tribal land in Chhatisgarh and several other states of the state. He further alleged that the government was oppressing innocent Adivasis under treason charges.
