Jamshedpur: East Singhbhum district administration here on Wednesday launched an awareness campaign among the villagers across the district to make them aware of the fake child lifting rumour and its hazardous aftereffects.
The campaign was launched in a bid to prevent repetition of lynching incidents witnessed on 18th May last in Bagbera and Rajnagar police station areas of East Singhbhum and Seraikela-Kharsawan districts respectively.
In this connection, the block development officer (BDO) of Jamshedpur Parul Singh convened a meeting of panchayat representatives at her office today and informed them about the purpose behind the campaign.
The BDO told the panchayat representatives that they had the duty of telling each and every citizen about the hazardous effects of rumours. The villagers should be informed about the mindless killing of seven persons in the hands of mob comprising hundreds of armed villagers in Nagadih village of Bagbera and Shobhapur village of Rajnagar, said the BDO.
The recent incidents show the brutality with which so many innocent people were killed by mob. The incident took place after rumours of their being child lifters spread in the said villages. This is a dangerous trend and should be nipped in the bud without any further delay, said the BDO.
The BDO said the culprits had misused social media to perpetrate the crime and provoke the people. She said the public representatives should warn villagers against the evils of misusing social media and ask them to use the platform in a responsible manner.
