Pakur–Gumani section to get 4th rail line, Rs 344 cr project cleared

Ranchi: The Ministry of Railways has sanctioned the construction of a 4th rail line between Pakur and Gumani (18.48 km) at an estimated cost of Rs 343.98 crore. The project, approved under the 2024-25 umbrella works for multi-tracking, flyovers and bypass lines, aims to ease congestion and expand capacity on one of the busiest freight corridors in eastern India.

The Pakur–Gumani stretch forms a crucial part of the Khana–Rampurhat–Gumani–Barharwa section, which caters to both freight and passenger traffic. With adjoining sections already sanctioned for additional lines, the corridor has emerged as a major freight artery. The current double line between Pakur and Gumani is operating beyond its capacity, necessitating the construction of a 4th line.

The project will particularly boost coal transportation, as nearly 41 MTPA of traffic is projected to be generated from the Godda–Pakur/Nagar Nabi coalfields by 2030. Around 14 coal rakes daily are expected to move towards Guru Hargobind Thermal Plant and Ghatampur Thermal Power Station, with empty rakes returning on this route. Gumani station already handles more than 29 goods trains daily in each direction, apart from about 35 passenger trains.

Besides coal, the additional line will support the movement of containers, petroleum products, stone and dolomite, creating new capacity for both freight and passenger services. It is expected to decongest the corridor, reduce delays and enhance operational efficiency, thereby improving service reliability.
