Jamshedpur, June 14: Jamshedpur East MLA Saryu Roy Tuesday spoke to East Singhbhum Deputy Commissioner (DC) Vijaya Jadhav and other administrative officials concerned regarding alleged discrimination against residents of Tata lease area in removal of encroachment and alleged ‘overcharging’ by Tata Steel UISL in providing electricity connection to new customers.

In a press statement issued today, the MLA said, “A customer of Namda Basti in Golmuri was asked to pay Rs 94,000 for getting new electricity connection by Tata Steel UISL. In Bhuiyandih and Ramjanamnagar areas, customers have been asked to pay Rs 30,000 to Rs 35,000 for new connection. This is an unjustified and arbitrary demand.”

Roy further added, “I have told the DC that as per Tata lease agreement, the company has to provide water and electricity connection to all citizens of the city and it should only charge as much as is charged normally by the Municipal Corporation. But the company is violating the terms of the agreement. Providing civic amenities to citizens should not be taken as a profitable business opportunity.”

Roy said he had apprised the DC that thousands of people of lease area were still deprived of water and electricity. “Due to the provision for providing civic amenities to citizens in Tata lease area, a municipal corporation could not be formed in Jamshedpur. In such situation, it is the responsibility of the government and the administration to compel the company to provide basic amenities like water and electricity to the citizens and seek information about the basic public amenities provided to them in the last 37 years,” he said.

Roy said he visited Sitaramdera between 7 am and 9 am and met many people on his way. He said he found the condition of civic amenities in the area deplorable. He further said that he had discussed the issue of hike in holding tax and rent of commercial shops in the city. He demanded that the government decision should be reviewed.
