Over 200 Coaching Institutes in Jamshedpur Operate Without Fire Safety Measures

The safety of thousands of students hangs in the balance as a staggering number of coaching institutes in Jamshedpur are operating in blatant violation of fire safety norms. Following a tragic fire incident in Lucknow’s Aliganj area on Monday, which claimed the lives of 15 students, the spotlight has swung back onto the severe lapses in the commercial education hubs of Jamshedpur.

The Lucknow tragedy has not only sent shockwaves through parents but has also served as a wake-up call for the local administration. Despite horrific past incidents of coaching center fires in Surat and other parts of the country, local operators continue to show absolute negligence toward basic safety protocols.

Only a Handful Registered; Most Lack Fire NOCs

An estimated 200+ small and large coaching centers are currently running aggressively across prominent commercial hubs including Sakchi, Bistupur, Mango, and Jugsalai. Shockingly, only a minute fraction of these institutes are officially registered with the district administration or relevant departments.

Most of these setups are packed into multi-story buildings, narrow alleys, and cramped rooms that lack proper legal documentation or Fire No-Objection Certificates (NOCs). For a few extra bucks of profit, operators are putting the lives of thousands of young students at risk every single day.

Structural Death Traps: Single Entry/Exit Points

The physical infrastructure of these institutes presents a massive hazard. According to safety guidelines, commercial teaching spaces must have at least two separate exit points to avoid stampedes during emergencies.

However, a majority of Jamshedpur’s coaching centers rely on a single, narrow door for both entry and exit. If a fire or short circuit occurs near this main entrance, students will be completely trapped inside. Furthermore, basic fire-fighting equipment, such as extinguishers, is entirely absent in multiple centers.

Public Skepticism Over ‘Routine’ Probes

Local residents and parents have expressed deep skepticism regarding the administration’s sudden activeness. Many pointed out that authorities only wake up after a major disaster occurs somewhere in the country. They launch a temporary “investigation drive” for a few days to subside public anger, only for the matter to be buried until the next tragedy strikes.
