Over 15000 households without water in Jamshedpur due to major snag in pumping system

Jamshedpur: Over 15000 household in Govindpur are reeling under water crisis from past 10 days due to a major snag cropped up due to alleged negligence of the electricity department.

The water supply has been affected as one of the transformers near the water pumping facility was hit by a lightening 10 days ago, due to which the pumping system is not working. The transformer was burnt due to the lightning.

An official of DW&SD, Jamshedpur confirmed about the suspension of the drinking water supply to the residents since the past 10 days.

” Though we had paid Rs 2.56 crores to the JBVNL for installing a dedicated feeder for the undisrupted power supply to the Chhotagovindpur drinking water project site.  The JBVNL installed 33 KV line for this purpose, but did not fix an earthing for a transformer at the filtration plant campus. The pumping stopped after the tranformer was burnt due to the lightning,” he said.

The executive engineer said that they had paid so much money to the JBVNL for installing the dedicated feeder, but the organisation did the work half-heartedly and did not install earthing system for the transformer set up in the campus.

It is really an agonising wait for the women for the arrival of water tankers in areas deprived of water supplies through the pipelines. Long queues of women standing for waters at hand pumps are regular feature, said Abhay Kant, a resident. It is really difficult times for us.  Long queues of women standing for waters at hand pumps are regular feature, said a resident.

According to the information, the water problem is more severe in the areas located at the tail-end of water supply system and on the city outskirts. In order to end the water woes of the resident the district administration has decided to distribute water through tankers in the areas of Baghbera, Jugsalai, Pursudih and Karandih, which are the worst affected areas.

The district administration expects that due to the scanty rainfall last year, more tube wells could dry up as the groundwater recedes further. To ensure water supply in the affected area, the public health and engineering department will increase the water tanker trips.
