Over 150 Guests Fall Ill after Suspected Food Poisoning at Sonari Hotel

Guests from Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru and Kolkata Hospitalized

Jamshedpur: What was meant to be a joyous wedding celebration turned into a major health emergency after more than 150 guests reportedly fell ill following a wedding feast at a prominent hotel on Sonari Marine Drive. The affected guests included members of a wedding procession from Chennai as well as visitors from several major cities across the country.

According to reports, the incident occurred during the wedding ceremony of the daughter of Dr. Keya Adak, a resident of Sonari Kagalnagar. The hotel had been booked from May 30 to June 1 for the high-profile event, which was attended by nearly 300 guests from Chennai, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Delhi, Kolkata and other cities.

Guests Suffer Vomiting, Diarrhea and Severe Stomach Pain

Shortly after consuming food served during the wedding reception on June 1, guests began experiencing symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhoea and acute abdominal pain. As the number of affected individuals increased, panic spread among family members and attendees.

Several guests, including close relatives of the groom, reportedly required medical attention. Many were rushed to hospitals, including Brahmananda Narayana Hospital in Sonari and Tata Main Hospital (TMH), where they received treatment.

Family Forced to Focus on Medical Emergency

Speaking about the ordeal, family members said the wedding celebrations were overshadowed by the sudden health crisis. Instead of enjoying the ceremony and welcoming guests, family members spent much of the time arranging medical assistance and transporting patients to hospitals.

Although the wedding rituals were eventually completed, complaints of illness continued to emerge even days later, prompting the family to submit a written complaint to the district administration.

Health and Food Safety Departments Launch Investigation

Taking serious note of the incident, Civil Surgeon Dr. Sahir Pal ordered an immediate inquiry. Officials from the District Surveillance Department visited the affected family to collect medical histories and gather details about the patients.

Medical experts indicated that the outbreak could have been caused by contaminated food, the use of stale ingredients, or contaminated drinking water. However, the exact cause will be determined only after laboratory analysis.

Food Samples Collected From Hotel

A team from the Food Safety Department has begun collecting food samples and inspecting kitchen facilities at the hotel. The samples have been sent for testing, and officials are awaiting the laboratory report.

District authorities stated that a special investigation team has been constituted to determine the cause of the incident. Officials assured that strict legal action would be taken against those found responsible once the investigation is completed.
