Jamshedpur, Aug 28: East Singhbhum and Seraikela-Kharsawan district police jointly launched a major drive against trafficking of bovine animals on Wednesday. They rescued over 100 cows being taken to slaughterhouses at various locations on 18 trucks. Two persons, identified as Sonu Yadav and Mahendra Yadav, were arrested in this connection.
Sources said members of Hindu Jagran Manch tipped off police about several animal traffickers carrying the animals in vehicles through the city. Soon a police team was set to crack down on the culprits. The team confiscated the vehicles and the animals before they could escape the limits of the district.
Members of Hindu Jagran Manch present during the campaign included Amit Sharma, Balbir Mandal, Ashish Agrawal, Satish Mukhi and Shubham Vishwakarma.
Sources said areas like Kapali and Sapra have become a hub of animal trafficking, especially after the construction of a bridge at Sonari Domuhani. Recently, police had seized two vehicles carrying cows just two days before Bakrid. Police however failed to seize two other vehicles. The animals seized today were brought here from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh and were being taken to West Bengal.
Sources said police had got a tip-off about animal trafficking in Shaharbera close to Sapra under Adityapur police station area in Seraikela-Kharsawan few days ago. Hindu Jagran Manch members informed police in both the districts. Police teams in MGM, Patamada, Adityapur, Gamharia and Chandil were rushed to rescue the animals.
