Nor’wester hits Jamshedpur, city records 15 mm rain

Jamshedpur, June 7: Jamshedpur recorded 15 mm of rain as season’s eleventh Nor’wester hit the city and several other places resulting in widespread thundershowers. The wind speed in the city was around 30 Kmph. It lasted for about 10 minutes followed by moderate showers.

Chaibasa in West Singhbhum also experienced the summer saviour storm at the same time while Ramgarh felt a two-minute snap squall. Chaibasa in West Singhbhum got 12 mm of rain. Capital Ranchi received about 5 mm of rain while Ramgarh, Giridih and Gumla recorded recorded rainfall between 5 mm and 10 mm.

In fact two storms originated from the Chhotanagpur plateau region . The first storm was triggered at Hazaribagh in north-west Jharkhand.

It covered places like Koderma, Ramgarh before hitting the eastern part of capital Ranchi in Sunday afternoon. The wind notched a speed of around 35 Kmph, the storm lasted for a few minutes followed by thunder showers.

The second storm originated from Giridih due to sudden formation of convective clouds. It travelled through Khunti, West Singhbhum, Seraikela-Kharsawan district before reaching Jamshedpur around 2.30 pm.

�Over the next day, it will come nearer as conditions are conducive,� he said, confirming that the onset of monsoon would take place around June 15.

But expect to get soaked, not drenched. In monsoon�s first phase this year, the showers will be moderate. �As the monsoon current is not very strong, it will yield rainfall ranging between 30mm and 40mm, but showers will be widespread,� said a duty officer at Met office. He added that satellite pictures indicated multi-layered rain-bearing clouds over many Jharkhand�s districts.

Weather analysts emphasised that the delayed onset this year was unlikely to affect the season�s overall performance. �After the initial lull, the state is expected to get abundant rainfall till the
end of June,� said a senior weatherman in Patna.
