Noel Tata’s Daughter Maya Tata May Exit Tata Digital, to Get a Bigger Role

Mumbai: In a significant development within the upper echelons of the Tata Group, Maya Tata, the 37-year-old daughter of Tata Trusts Chairman Noel Tata, is reportedly exploring an exit from Tata Digital. This potential relocation comes at a time when the group’s digital e-commerce arm is undergoing massive restructuring and facing intense oversight regarding its financial losses.

According to sources familiar with the matter, Maya Tata is currently evaluating leadership roles across other Tata Group entities, including Tata Consumer Products and the listed retail giant Trent Limited, with reports indicating a strong inclination toward the latter.

Tata Digital Under Severe Stress

Tata Digital, which operates the group’s marquee digital consumer platforms—including BigBasket, Tata Neu, Croma, and Tata 1mg—has been one of the most capital-intensive bets made by Tata Sons, drawing investments exceeding ₹24,000 crore.

However, several of these digital ventures continue to battle significant profitability and cash-flow challenges in highly competitive market segments. As part of an ongoing aggressive drive to curb operational expenses, the workforce at the flagship super-app Tata Neu has already been drastically reduced by more than half.

Noel Tata Red-Flags New Funding Needs

The news of Maya Tata’s prospective exit closely follows tense discussions within the Tata Sons boardroom. During a board meeting on May 26, the management sought formal approval for an additional equity infusion of approximately ₹7,000 crore into its digital consumer businesses.

Tata Trusts Chairman Noel Tata strongly questioned the sheer scale of this proposed investment, raising concerns over the aggressive growth assumptions in the business plan. The skepticism is compounded by internal financial projections laid before the board, which reveal that these digital platforms could incur cumulative losses of up to ₹9,000 crore over the next three financial years.

A Shift to the Retail Arm?

Unlike her siblings, who have remained attached to single group companies throughout their tenures, Maya Tata has built a diverse internal portfolio, starting her career with Tata Capital before transitioning to Tata Digital.

If she moves to Trent Limited, she will be joining a business space where her family already holds profound roots. Her father, Noel Tata, serves as the Chairman of Trent, while her brother, Neville Tata, is already deeply involved with the company, managing the operations of the Star Bazaar hypermarket chain. Meanwhile, their elder sister, Leah Tata, continues her professional journey with Indian Hotels Company, which manages the Taj luxury hotel chain. All three siblings simultaneously serve on the boards of smaller philanthropic entities under the umbrella of Tata Trusts.

The broader operational performance of unlisted ventures, notably Air India and Tata Digital, has increasingly moved to the center of discussions between Tata Trusts and Tata Sons management as capital allocation guidelines tighten across the conglomerate.
