NML to felicitate science teachers with ‘The Best Science Teacher Award

Jamshedpur : The CSIR-National Metallurgical Laboratory (NML), Burmamines and National Academy of Sciences have decided to felicitate science teachers in their attempt to promote scientific temperament in the society.

The Jharkhand state chapter of National Academy of Sciences, Allahabad in collaboration with NML has instituted an award, ‘The Best Science Teacher Award’ from 2017. Teachers who have knack for science as fun and have preferred out of the classroom teaching can get the opportunity to be recognised to motivate for making science easier for students.

The objective of instituting the award is to recognise a teacher every year, teaching science in high schools or higher secondary schools or intermediate colleges and other equivalent institutions.

“It is indeed an innovative step to promote the teachers. We wanted to do something to promote science not only in the masses but teachers as well as students. We have decided to recognise teachers who have taken a unique path and innovative method to teach science and make this subject interesting for their students,” said Arvind Sinha, the chairman of National Academy of Sciences, Jharkhand and chief scientist, CSIR-NML.

The award will include a cash prize of Rs 10,000 and a citation will be handed over to the selected teacher(s) during Science Day Function at CSIR NML, Jamshedpur that is scheduled in February 2017. The selection will be based on nominations received from schools and colleges for the teachers, involved in teaching science subjects in classes IX to XII. Schools will have to fill out a form which will be analysed by the selectors. The number of the recipients can be more than one something that the teams are yet to decide.

NML is an ISO 9001:2000 certified laboratory, under the aegis of Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR), is a premium metallurgical research and development house providing a range of far reaching solutions to the problems of minerals, metals and materials. The laboratory was formally inaugurated and dedicated to the nation on the November 26, 1950 by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.
