Ranchi: Jharkhand has achieved a significant milestone in medical education after the National Medical Commission (NMC) approved an increase in the number of MBBS seats at the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Ranchi, from 180 to 250. The enhanced intake will come into effect from the current academic session, allowing 250 students to enroll in the state’s premier medical institution.

The approval marks another major step in the state government’s efforts to strengthen medical education and healthcare infrastructure across Jharkhand.

The Department of Health, Medical Education and Family Welfare has been working to expand undergraduate and postgraduate medical education in government medical colleges. To secure the approval, the department submitted detailed proposals, compliance reports and other required documents to the Central Government and the NMC.

A high-level review meeting, chaired by Additional Chief Secretary Ajay Kumar Singh, assessed the availability of infrastructure, faculty, hostels, classrooms, laboratories and other essential facilities required to support the increased student intake.

Earlier, the state had successfully increased MBBS seats at MGM Medical College, Jamshedpur, from 100 to 150. The latest approval for RIMS represents the second major achievement under the expansion initiative.

Welcoming the approval, Health, Medical Education and Family Welfare Minister Dr. Irfan Ansari described it as the beginning of a new era for Jharkhand’s healthcare and medical education sectors.

He said the government had been working consistently at the grassroots level to improve the health system, including strengthening facilities at RIMS. According to the minister, coordinated efforts by the department are gradually transforming the institution, and RIMS is expected to emerge as a model medical institution in the country in the coming years.

Additional Chief Secretary Ajay Kumar Singh said the government’s objective is to provide aspiring medical students in Jharkhand with greater access to quality medical education without having to leave the state.

He emphasized that the increase in MBBS seats is supported by corresponding improvements in infrastructure, including additional faculty members, modern laboratories, upgraded equipment, hostels and classrooms in accordance with NMC norms.

He also expressed confidence that MBBS and postgraduate seat capacities in other government medical colleges would be enhanced in the future, helping address the shortage of specialist doctors in the state.

Dr. D.K. Sinha, Director-in-Charge of RIMS, termed the NMC approval a matter of pride for both the institution and Jharkhand.

He credited the achievement to the continuous guidance and support of the state government, including Chief Minister Hemant Soren, Health Minister Dr. Irfan Ansari and Additional Chief Secretary Ajay Kumar Singh.

Dr. Sinha reaffirmed the institute’s commitment to maintaining high standards of medical education while fully complying with NMC regulations.

Officials believe the increase in MBBS seats at MGM Medical College and RIMS will significantly expand opportunities for students aspiring to pursue medical education within Jharkhand.
