NIT Jamshedpur: Experts. brainstorm on Smart Agriculture

Jamshedpur: In a dynamic initiative towards technological innovation and skill development, the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Jamshedpur is currently hosting a 5-day Advanced Entrepreneurship and Skill Development Programme (A-ESDP) based on IoT and Global Navigation Satellite System. The programme is funded by the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, Government of India.

 

The primary objective of the A-ESDP is to delve into the fundamentals of IoT, explore its basic building blocks, examine applications of IoT in agriculture, and provide hands-on training. Additionally, the program focuses on Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), GNSS positioning technology, applications of GNSS, and the design of wireless sensors tailored for agricultural use.

Students from various institutions across the country, including Sikkim, Jammu and Kashmir, West Bengal, Bihar, Odisha, and Jharkhand, are participating in this comprehensive 5-day event. Distinguished guests from prominent educational institutions such as IIT BHU, IIT Kharagpur, and Burdwan University, as well as representatives from the Meteorological Department and multinational corporations, are contributing to the programme.

The inauguration, held at the Diamond Jubilee Hall of the Institute, featured key figures including Prof. Goutam Sutradhar (Director, NIT Jamshedpur), Prof. Mrityunjay Kumar Sinha (Convenor, Dean, Research and Consultancy), Dr. Dilip Kumar (Head of Department, ECE), and Program Coordinator Dr. Surjit Kundu (Assistant Professor, ECE Department). Prof. Sutradhar, the chief guest, emphasised the benefits of IoT and GNSS in agriculture, underscoring the importance of the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises. Prof. Mrityunjay Kumar Sinha urged attendees to leverage advanced technology in the national interest.

Dr. Surjeet Kundu expressed gratitude to all participants and provided insights into the topics covered during the program. On the first day, distinguished speakers including Prof. Manchikanti Padmavati of IIT Kharagpur, Prof. Rintu Banerjee, Dr. Piyush Soni, and Dr. Anindya Bose of Burdwan University shared their expertise. Prof. Manchikanti Padmavati discussed Intellectual Property Rights, emphasizing the importance of patenting new experiments. Prof. Rintu Banerjee highlighted the role of IIT Kharagpur in supporting new entrepreneurs in the agriculture sector, while Dr. Piyush Soni provided insights into information-based management systems for advanced agriculture.

The media in-charge of the institute, Sunil Kumar Bhagat, provided information about the programme. The event marks a significant step towards fostering technological innovation and entrepreneurship in the field of agriculture, aligning with the national agenda of leveraging technology for sustainable development.
