New speed breakers to come up at accident prone zones

Jamshedpur : Concerned over the rising cases of road mishaps, the traffic police of the East Singhbhum district police have decided to set up speed breakers at number points on the city roads which are considered to be accident prone.

The initiative to set up speed breakers at the accident-prone roads has been rolled out due to rising cases of mishaps.

The five accident-prone zones that have been identified by the district administration are Hathigora Temple area (close to Sakchi-Mango Road and Subarnarekha Link Road), Jubilee Park gate (near district collectorate), Garam Nullah (near Tata Steel Security Training Centre), Voltas Building turnaround in Bistupur (the Bistupur-Jugsalai intersection) and the road between Litti Chowk in Bhuiyandih and Slag Road in Humepipe.

Deputy superintendent of police (traffic) Rakesh Mohan Sinha said that they have identified a number points where the speed breakers are necessary to be set up.

The traffic DSP pointed out that though they have identified the points for setting up the rumblers, but they would go ahead with the move only after holding a meeting with the authority of Jusco, the utility company which maintains the roads.

“We may decide what should be done for checking road mishap, but after all the Jusco is the owner of the road and we will set up the rumbllers or any other form of speed-dividers only after getting a nod from the utility company. A meeting will be held with the officials of the utility company shortly, where all the traffic-related problems
have to be sorted out,” said the senior traffic police officer.

Traffic police have put up speed limit hoardings at sensitive zones. But the hoardings seem to have failed to meet the purpose. “Automated speed regulating system with provisions for hefty fine will check rash driving,” said a traffic police sub-inspector. The speed gun device can accurately record speed of a vehicle from a distance of 1.2km, thereby allowing traffic police to act against those offending the speed limit.

The number of road accidents in the city was showing a downward trend till recently. But with beginning of summer season cases of accidents have shot suddenly turning the roads into a virtual death traps.

According to information, cases of accidents are on rise and within the first few months of year 30 odd cases have been reported so far Jamshedpur.

On the other hand statistics show that among the vehicles at fault (vehicles responsible for the death of victims) in road accidents, trucks and trailers topped the list.

These heavy vehicles were responsible for the death of 100 odd people and injuries to more than 400 people last year, proving that the twin menace of over-speeding and rash driving continue to be ignored by the law makers and enforcers alike.

Though District Traffic Advisory Committee, (DTAC) took up various issues in the direction of checking the rising incidents of road accident in the East Singhbhum but still the situation remains the same.

DTAC is in place for last few years but over the months it rarely ever met to deliberate on the issues pertaining to the road rage cases. And, probably for the first time in the year 2009 the committee held a meeting afternoon that witnessed full strength participation of the members.
